Jackpots
Jackpot Slots Explained
How local, network, and must-hit-by jackpots are funded, and what that means for your stake.
Updated 2026-08-17. 21+ only. Gambling is entertainment, not income.
Three common jackpot types
Standalone or local jackpots sit on one game or one operator. Network jackpots pool a slice of wagers across many sites. Must-hit-by jackpots are designed to award before a published ceiling, which changes the feel of the meter as it climbs.
A growing meter is not a signal that the next spin is more likely to win, except in products that explicitly use a must-hit-by mechanic. Read the rules in the paytable.
How the prize is funded
Jackpot contribution usually comes from a percentage of each qualifying bet. That can lower the base-game RTP compared with a non-jackpot version of the same slot.
If you are spinning only for the base game, a jackpot title may be a worse entertainment buy than a standard video slot with similar features and a clearer RTP.
Practical rules
Jackpots are marketing. They are also random. Do not budget as if a hit is coming. If the only reason you are still playing is the meter, that is a stop signal.
- Confirm whether your bet size qualifies for the jackpot.
- Separate jackpot play from your regular slots budget.
- Never deposit again solely because the meter looks close.
Questions
Is a full meter about to hit?
Only if the game rules say so, such as a must-hit-by ceiling. A large network meter can sit for a long time.
