NCAAB Betting Basics
How college basketball moneylines, spreads, totals, and live lines work, plus bankroll rules that keep it entertainment.
Updated 2026-08-17. 21+ only. Gambling is entertainment, not income.
Core markets
A moneyline is a pick to win the game. A point spread is a pick against a handicap. A total is over or under combined points. Same-game parlays combine those legs, usually at a worse combined price than the raw odds imply.
College basketball has high variance: fouls, turnovers, and tempo swings. Live lines move quickly after a run. If you did not set a stake before tip-off, skip the in-play market.
What the number is not telling you
A posted line is not a prediction of the final score. It is a price designed to balance the book. Shopping juice and reading team news still does not create a guaranteed edge.
If you cannot explain why a bet is sized the way it is, the size is too large.
- Use a unit size, not a 'get even' size.
- Do not parlay your way out of a losing day.
- Stop if you are betting because you are bored or angry.
Questions
Is live betting a better price?
Sometimes the number is closer to the current state of the game. It is also easier to overreact. Cap live bets before the game starts.
